Halloween 2026 Near the Hollywood Hills: Local Events and Trick-or-Treat Tips

by Paula Present

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so the whole weekend is going to be busy around the hills. I've lived in Laurel Canyon my whole life, and I love this time of year up here. Here's what's happening close to home, plus a few things I've learned about trick-or-treating on hillside streets.

West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval

Saturday, October 31, 6 to 11 p.m. on Santa Monica Boulevard between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard. It's free and it's huge. The City of West Hollywood recommends leaving kids and pets at home because it gets crowded and a little wild. Backpacks and tote bags aren't allowed, but clear plastic bags are. Parking will be tough, so take the free WeHo Halloween Ride shuttle along Santa Monica Boulevard or use rideshare.

Boo at the L.A. Zoo

Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25, and again October 31 and November 1, with trick-or-treat stations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It's free with zoo admission or membership. There are candy stations, costume characters, an inflatable corn maze and Bob Baker Marionette shows on Halloween. This is a great pick for little ones. Costumes are welcome, but full-face masks aren't allowed. The zoo is at 5333 Zoo Drive in Griffith Park.

Día de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever

Saturday, October 24, from noon until midnight at Hollywood Forever, 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard. It's one of the biggest Day of the Dead celebrations in Southern California, with beautiful altars, music and art. Check ladayofthedead.com for tickets.

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

Select nights through November 1 in Griffith Park. Tickets start at $34.99 for the hayride, or $49.99 with the haunted houses. This one is scary, so it's better for teens and adults.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood

Select nights through November 1, starting at 7 p.m., just over the hill in Universal City. Tickets start around $87, and Saturdays cost more. This is another one for the brave.

Trick-or-treating in the hills

Our streets are narrow and winding, many don't have sidewalks, and parking is limited. If you're driving, go slow and watch for kids crossing between parked cars. If you're walking with kids, bring a flashlight and stick to the side of the road. A lot of families stay close to home and walk their own block, and that's half the fun. If you're handing out candy, a porch light on and a clear path to the door goes a long way.

Have a safe and happy Halloween, neighbors.
